It goes without saying that eye make up is the most popular type of cosmetic and even just the simplest sweep of eye liner can really work to flatter your eyes.
Different eyeliner styles work to add definition and impact to your lash line, which can be used to compliment an eye look or the eye itself.
There are numerous different types of eyeliner to choose from and often, when I am doing a beauty makeover I am asked how to apply eyeliner during a makeup application and what is the best eyeliner to use.

My answer is that it varies according to the overall effect I am trying to achieve for that particular makeup look, because no one texture works for all.
Eyeliner Application
Applying eyeliner does require a steady hand. For best application it helps to pull your eyelid taught so the skin doesn’t ruffle, which will create a broken line.
If you have never applied eye liner before try this technique. Sit down at a table in a good light with a mirror, take your eyeliner in your hand and rest your elbow on the table which will help to keep your hand steady.
Begin by drawing the line in one direction and once you have drawn it all the way across the lid, go over it in the other direction. For best application, apply your eyeliner after your eyeshadow and before your mascara.
Eyeshadow Powder
Makeup artists often use eyeshadow to outline the eyes and in my opinion they are eyeliner tips worth stealing. Eye shadow looks really great in the evening, helping to create a smoky eye effect, for added drama.
In order to create soft, sultry defined eyes, line along both the top and bottom lashes with eye shadow. Browns, blacks and charcoals will all work really well to help you to achieve this look.
Powder can also be used over your eyeliner pencil, to seamlessly blend into the root of the lashes. It should be applied with a detailed eye brush as close to the roots as possible, of both the upper and lower lashes.
Pencil Eyeliner
This is the easiest way to add extra emphasis to your eyes. The texture of your pencil ideally should be soft and creamy, because if it is to hard it will be difficult to apply. The best pencils are kohl as they give a lot more intensity then generic eye liners.
In order to create a defined line with your pencil, first make sure it is freshly sharpened and use short sharp strokes in a line, from the inside corner out.
Then try to overlap each stroke to make sure the line doesn’t appear cracked or broken. To apply liner inside the lower lid, pull it down and draw from the inner corner out.
Liquid Liner
This is a great product for giving your eyes definition and creating that visible solid line. Liquid liners have a fluid consistency so aren’t the easiest product to apply around the eyes.
A good technique is to gently wipe any excess product off the tip of the liner first, which will give you more precision.
To apply the liner look down into your mirror to prevent the liquid smudging, then stay like this for a few seconds in order to give it time to dry.
I find that liquid liners really don’t leave any room for mistakes, I tend to only use them to intensify blackness around the lash line, when creating a smoky evening look.
Gel Eyeliner
Personally I would always recommend a gel liner over a liquid one, as liquid liner does have a tendency to crack.
These are really easy to apply and because they don’t dry as fast as liquid liners, you can easily blend them into your shadow. I have really watery eyes and for me I find they are the best waterproof eyeliner, as they have really great staying power and rarely smudge.
The best technique is to use a flat liner brush, which will lay against the lid. This way you don’t have to drag the brush across the lid, causing the product to smudge.
Dip the brush in the product and start at the outer corner of the eye, press the brush down moving it slightly from side to side. Continue this movement overlapping along the eyeliner as you work, from the outer corner in.
There are also semi permanent eyeliners available, which involves a technique that is similar to tattoo application and although expensive, many women love the idea of not having to regularly apply makeup.
Professional Tips
To create cat like eyes, apply eyeliner from the inner corner out. First along the lashes making short strokes and lengthening the line a bit at a time beyond the outer corner of the eye.
If you have applied eyeliner on the lower lid but found that it runs down the cheeks, a little trick is to brush a dark matte powder under the bottom lashes. This will act as a barrier and help to keep your eyeliner in place.
If you have really small eyes don’t apply eyeliner all around the eyes, this will work to diminish the eyes further.
To give your eyes pop, apply a white liner around the lower rim of your eye, which will really help to give your tired eyes a lift.
If you choose to use a soft liquid line along the top of your lashes, leave the underneath bare or softly defined. Anything to harsh will work to draw the eyes down.
